Charles Marsh is an award-winning writer, editor, and professor. A former editor of American Way, the inflight magazine of American Airlines, Marsh was a professor of journalism at the University of Kansas for 32 years. He retired in 2021 as the Oscar Stauffer Professor of Journalism and Associate Dean for Research. He is the founding author of two bestselling textbooks and has won five international awards for his research on modern applications of classical rhetoric. In 2023, the International Journal of Strategic Communication published a special issue “conceptualized as a continuation of Charles Marsh’s earlier and ground-breaking work.” His research for A Heap of Shocking Events: A Tangled Search for the Scandalous Lady Anne Stuart began in 1982, when, as a graduate student completing his Ph.D. in English literature, he discovered Stuart in a footnote.
